Air conditioning upgrade of old stone building

What We Did

Advantage have been maintaining and repairing the air conditioning systems at Russell New’s offices since 1994, but time has taken its toll and they have now reached the end of the line. All of the systems used R22 refrigerant and because of their age, they were becoming more and more problematic and inefficient to run. It was time to upgrade.

The age and construction of the building (an historic stone barn) meant that the ceilings were very low and this necessitated the selection of high wall type indoor units. This enabled individual control of the conditions within each of the areas – a feature sadly lacking from the single zone ducted systems that were being replaced.

We designed and specified a Daikin heat recovery VRV air conditioning system to meet the cooling and heating loads in the largely cellular office spaces.  The first phase required the replacement of three ageing Carrier ducted units with a single VRV heat recovery unit. As well as being far more energy efficient, the new system occupied far less external space and was significantly quieter, which means that our client can now use the beautiful flagstone patio at the rear of the premises for eating outside (weather permitting!).

In partnership with equipment manufacturer Daikin and ourselves, our client was able to secure significant funding through the Carbon Trust Green Business Fund, up to 15% of the purchase cost of the energy saving equipment. To achieve this we were required to demonstrate the energy savings that could be made by replacing the existing ducted systems with new VRV air conditioning equipment.

These turned out to be significant. The first phase had a predicted energy saving of 77% over the life of the equipment. The second phase (which we are currently installing) has a predicted energy saving of 68%.

Here’s what our client had to say:

“Our old building threw up some challenges but Advantage took it all in their stride. From designing a complex system to installation and commissioning, the Advantage team had it all under control. Critically, they also provided us with all the energy saving calculations we needed in order to meet the Carbon Trust criteria thus allowing us to successfully secure funding. We are delighted with our new air conditioning system and with the service we received.”
