What We Did

Overheating due to solar gain was predicted to be an issue, particularly in the kitchen diner and our client also had a requirement to cool their master bedroom and home office on the first floor. We were tasked with providing a solution to ensure year round comfort in all of the rooms, whilst ensuring that the system had a minimal impact on the aesthetics of both the internal and external spaces.

The need for cooling in the kitchen diner was confirmed when we calculated the cooling loads for each of the rooms. The principal load in the kitchen diner was solar gain due to the large amount of glazing and the direction in which it faced.

To offset the heat gains we designed a Mitsubishi Electric mini VRF air conditioning system capable of cooling all three rooms using concealed fan coil units served by a single outdoor unit. All of this is carried out in house by our own engineers.

We worked closely with the client’s builder during the design phase and the solution for the kitchen diner was to conceal the ducted fan coil unit within a void created for us by them above the utility room. Conditioned air was supplied via a bespoke 4m long linear slot diffuser, mounted in the vertical face of a bulkhead specifically formed to extend the line of the existing kitchen ceiling and minimise its impact on the overall aesthetic.

We selected a LUXAIR® diffuser because it provides high quality air diffusion for the air conditioning system and (uniquely) incorporates high performance LED lighting. This allowed us to sympathetically integrate the installation with the client’s own lighting scheme.

Cooling to the master bedroom and home office was provided by two further concealed fan coil units mounted in the loft. They too supply conditioned air via linear slot diffusers mounted in the ceiling of each room.

The mini VRF outdoor unit was mounted at ground level, behind the chimney at the side of the house to ensure it was hidden from sight.

Finally, to continue the theme of seamless integration, in addition to the standard wired controls, the entire air conditioning system is interfaced to the client’s Control4 home automation system via 3^rd party wireless gateways. This enables the system to be controlled via the Control4 app for smart devices using either iOS or Android.
